820 Squadron History:
820 was formed on Wednesday, April 5, 1972 and was originally named 820 Milton Blue Thunder Squadron. It was only in 2005 that the squadron was renamed in honour of Milton’s own Colonel Chris Hadfield, the former astronaut and commander of the International Space Station, who was a cadet with 820 from 1971 to 1978. Through his time with the squadron, Colonel Chris Hadfield earned his Glider Pilot licence at the age of 15, and then his Power Pilot licence at the age of 16. Colonel Hadfield recently returned to the squadron to be the Reviewing Officer for 820’s 45th Annual Ceremonial Review on June 24, 2017.
820 Squadron Today:
820 is very proud that since its establishment 51 cadets have earned their Glider or Private Pilot´s licence through its dedicated Ground School program. This is an amazing record! Many 820 Squadron cadets have moved on to careers in either military or commercial aviation.
